The Chromatic Fun by experienced cello teacher Mechthild van der Linde is structured in three parts (A-B-A1). In the A section, the four parts are distributed across the four cello strings. Small rhythmic challenges, time signature changes, the use of the first and second octave harmonics, as well as stomping, tapping, and behind-the-bridge bowing instructions help the players achieve flexibility in mind and body. The B section is calmer and requires artificial harmonics from the first two cellists.
The Siberian Gallop by English composer Pamela Wedgwood was originally composed for cello and piano. It was arranged for four cellos by Mechthild van der Linde. The first part was raised to an octave and can be played entirely in the first thumb position.
Both pieces have been successfully performed several times at the "Jugend musiziert" competition in the Ib age group.
