Martin BaerenzMartin Bärenz (born 1956) is a versatile classical musician specializing in the cello. He lives in Heidelberg and performs worldwide. He also plays the double bass and violone, particularly Baroque music. He composes and arranges for orchestras and ensembles.
About the composition
The Heidelberg composer and cellist Martin Bärenz composed these pieces 2019 under the impact of the life-threatening illness of his friend Volker Leuchte, to whom this edition is dedicated in memoriam. The Four Pieces for Cello Quartet premiered on January 26, 2020, as part of the "Jugend musiziert" competition in Heidelberg.
The first cello part reaches the 7th position in a few places, the second cello is required to reach the 4th position, and the third and fourth cellos are placed lower.
The four character movements are marked 1. Largo (short introduction), then Allegro, 2. Scherzo (Allegro), 3. Grave (Andante), and 4. Finale (Allegro). The cello quartet is very suitable for students; it is harmonically and rhythmically accessible and varied.
