About the composition

Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition for 4 cellos

arranged by Martin Baerenz

The “Pictures at an Exhibition” have always been a source of inspiration for arrangements including those for symphony orchestra, rock band, synthesizer, wind quintet etc. Here we have an atmospheric and intelligent arrangement of the original piano score with a few borrowings from Ravel’s orchestral arrangement. It is thanks to the original that this is a serious piece of music. Some movements are easier to play while others are more challenging. In the 15 movements the fourth cello has to go up occasionally into higher positions. The challenge of this music is to play together well, find a broad palette of sounds and produce different moods, as in the Moderato commodo assai e con delicatezza (Promenade II) with the directions sempre senza vibr. e con sordino or in the Andante molto cantabile e con dolore (Il vecchio castello).

Suitable for gifted amateurs and professionals.
