About the composition
Jo Quail: The Hidden Forest for cello solo
In two interlinked movements, "The Hidden Forest" depicts an area of coastline – Pett Level – in East Sussex on the south coast of England. Above a beach of stones and natural boulders the cliffs rise high, with overhanging tree roots creating a sparse suspended canopy. At low tide strange forms seem to emerge from beneath the sand and rocks. These bewitching shapes are the remains of a forest, dating from around 6000 years ago, now gradually sunken in to the steadily rising sea. (Jo Quail)
