Hauke Hack (*1967) is primarily a cellist, playing in a professional orchestra, organizing and performing in cello ensembles and other chamber music groups, giving courses, conducting a large amateur string orchestra, and occasionally composing music. His compositions and cello ensemble arrangements are created for various celebrations, specific concerts, or dedicated to individual performers. Meander was written for his daughter Anouchka Hack.
He studied composition with Günther Cellarius (Clara Schumann Music School) and Prof. Manfred Reiter (Cologne University of Music).
About the composition
Hauke Hack: “The Other Art of the Fugue”
This piece for soprano and cello quintet was composed in 2005 for a programme of works performed for the first time in a concert entitled “frisch verfugt”. The German word for fugue “Fuge” also means the layer of mortar between bricks or stone. Since the composer’s grandfather was a bricklayer Hauke Hack felt inspired to set to music a German description of the technique of bricklaying. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a work called “The Art of the Fugue” (Die Kunst der Fuge BWV 1080) and so the title of this piece is a wordplay on Bach”s composition and the craft of the bricklayer or stonemason. The piece lasts about 6 minutes.
The score, the five cello parts (with the soprano part for guidance) and the piano reduction for the soprano comprise 41 pages printed on high quality paper.
