About the composition

Robert Schumann: Cello Concerto Op. 129 in an arrangement of all three complete movements for solo cello and cello quartet by Soraya Ansari; Edition No. 57, score and parts, 95 printed pages (altogether 108) on high quality paper.

"While still a student I often accompanied the concerto for cello and orchestra op. 129 by Robert Schumann in the version for solo cello and three cellos by Richard Klemm. Thereby the wish of my colleagues and myself arose again and again to complete the shortened tutti in the third movement and to improve some other passages. I fulfilled this wish when I had studied the solo part and wanted to perform the work with cello ensemble. During this project I realised that to add a further cello would be an improvement and make it easier for the three accompanying cellos since they would have to change between various instrumental parts less often. Also a quartet would be closer to the fullness of an orchestra than a trio.
The version for cello solo and cello quartet was created in 2015 from the “Breitkopf & Haertel” score of 1997. The dynamics, articulation and slurs were all respected and the performance on the violoncello has to take into consideration the nature of the respective orchestral instruments.
The interpreters should use their imagination in order to get close to the spirit of the original. For instance it is possible to use tremoli instead of the written sixteenth notes in bars 34, 43 and 214 in order to imitate the tutti sound of the strings.
The solo part is included for the sake of completeness. Fingerings and bowings have deliberately been left out."
